Display locomotives
Posted by spokyone on Saturday, April 28, 2007 6:27 PM

We all have seen many steam locomotives in parks, but few diesels. I can not seem to find any info for this fallen flag that is now parked in Keithsburg IL, not far from my town. Last year a short paragraph in the local paper was only story I have seen. Does anyone have info on this?

The caboose has been on display much longer. In the distance note the M&SL bridge that still stands. Some kids accidently set the lift portion on fire several years ago and the cables failed. The Corps had to remove the section.

All I know about the Minneapolis & St. Louis is that it was bought by the Chicago & North Western. Diesels aren't that hard to find. There is a PRR GP9 on horseshoe curve, the depot at Barstow, CA has a ATSF FP45 and a UP SD40-2 on display, there is a GM&O GP30 in Mobile, AL, etc. Most diesels still have some revenue value as opposed to the high cost fo steam locos makes them less likely to be on display yet, unless they are historically significant because of model or owner.

Thanks for the link. It has answered many questions. I also found Nanaimo's Mississippi Bridge thread to be helpful.

Just read in the latest issue of TRAINS that the R.J. Corman Company has four GP units on display out side of it's headquarters....FOUR!

Keithsburg Ill is downstream on the Mississippi about 30 miles from Moline Illinois. The new business man in town put in the fill above the flood stage. The grain silo is an active loading point for river barges.I still have no history of the 700

Here are several photos of M&STL locomotives, including some of the GP9s, but not the 700.

http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?id=MSTL

And there is nothing on rr-fallenflags. How long has the 700 been displayed there, it can't be too long ? It certainly looks like they did a good job setting it up.

If you scroll down on this to 24755, it lists the original 700 as being Wisconsin Central 1701.

This was posted on LocoNotes-

The ex-BN 1800 is now displayed at Keithsburg, IL repainted as the
Minneapolis & St. Louis #700 in the red and white paint scheme.

It was placed there last November of so.

Once again your research has answered my questions. Thank you.
I will try to set up an account at rrpicturearchives to share my photo. This shows traction motors removed.

I like looking for things !

Your locomotive, hi-nose BN 1800, originally GN 727 -

http://www.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/GP9/1800.HTM

I believe WC scrapped the original M&STL before they were aquired by CN.

Low-nose WC 1701-

For anybody who gets to Madison, Wisconsin there is an old Milwaukee Road E-9 (gutted and in sad shape) on display outside the former Milwaukee Road passenger station (now a restaurant) in Madison (I think with at least a way car and/or several passenger cars). She is in sad shape but good to see nonetheless.

There has never been to much train displays in memphis all we have is a 2-8-2 and like 10 passenger cars one car had a G-scale layout in it. It was cool but there lease on the car was up and it is now being turned into a resturant.

In Madison, the old MILW depot is now a bike store.  There are a few cars behind the gutted E unit (ex NYC, IIRC).  3 or 4 stainless steel fluted cars, and a ex-MILW business car.

In Milton, WI the former CNW-MILW depot is a restaurant, with a ex-MNS H10-44 and MILW ribside caboose, both in CNW paint.  The caboose is attached to the building, and you can eat inside of it.

I am going to Madison WI later this month. Will check out the Milton location. What is the name of the restaurant?
Edit: I think that would be Liberty Station.

Both displayed and preserved EMD units listed here - some are still operational and in service at various museums.

http://thedieselshop.us/PRSVDemdOthers.HTML

Just remember the paint used on display equipment outside a museum setting may or MAY NOT reflect the steel and rust beneath it. Neither the Milton nor Madison units match the paint they wear. Sad [:(] Confused [%-)]

As long as you're in the area - here's some real historyAngel [angel]

WSOR E9 10C was delivered in April 1956 as: Wink [;)] MILW 202A and

WSOR SD40-2 4009 (June 1974): Wink [;)] MILW 199

Not uncommon for the 10C and its UP-born sister 10A to be spotted in Madison. Cool [8D]

Six more: WSOR SD40-2 4001 * delivered 12/1973 as CRI&P 4799 [Rock on!]

AND sisters 4002-4006 are also ex-Rock Island's from that same delivery!

Can anybody recreate that GEEP and Caboose pair in O Gauge, O Scale or G Gauge?
