GE Tier 4 Diesels in Test on Donner Pass

High altitude testing for new Tier 4 units on Donner Pass.  The two mile tunnel does not have ventilation and the new units were tested to verify how they would perform under those conditions.

This is the reason for the tunnel testing.

The exhaust from the previous two westbound trains still linger in the tunnel as an eastbound empty coal train starts to enter the tunnel.

Saw them in Roseville yesterday afternoon. Hidden in the back.

Years ago I used to chase SP trains up on Donner Pass from Colfax to Norden.  Know where everyone of your shots were taken.  It brings back great memories.  The one spot that you did take a picture was at Cape Horn.  It was my favorite spot to watch trains.

They seem to be running from Roseville to Sparks recently since the testing period was completed.

The units were schedule to move to Truckee that morning and left Roseville early in the morning prior to any good light.  We caught them moving at the Colfax Long Ravine bridge, but I was driving and missed that shot.

The picture below shows a second westbound train coming out of Tunnel 41 and you can see the exhaust smoke.  This is the type of conditions the uphill trains experience.

I really need to find time to make it up the Hill. I'm getting sick and tired of shots of the Roseville Engine Shop. The Dash 8-40Cs were interesting at first, but now.... However, I did catch these 2 on the Sand Track behind Denio's this morning.
