GE Tier 4 Testing on Donner Week of May 27th

  • The 2021 and 2022 are new units being tested on Donner Pass this week. These are first article type testing for certification prior to the 2015 deadline for Tier 4 new units. I noticed pictures on Train Orders of two more of this type of units working the Power River area on coal trains. Sorry, I cannot get the link to work for the slideshow so I posted a few pictures. http://s806.photobucket.com/user/Trainsforyou/slideshow/Show%20Short?sort=6 http://s806.photobucket.com/user/Trainsforyou/slideshow/Show%20Short?sort=6

  • http://s806.photobucket.com/user/Trainsforyou/slideshow/Show%20Short?sort=6 I was curious about the rear horn and asked about it. The GE personnel told me the height of the housing over the motor blocks the front horns. You can see the insides of the long hood. This is probably to get more air into the radiators, much like the old tunnel motors used.
  • It seems that the new Tier 4 units requires low sulfur fuel to meet the January 2015 for new units built next year.
  • Great photos! Thanks for posting. It will be interesting to see the look of the production units.

  • Thanks. If this passes the testing, we are looking at the first article according to the GE personnel and the production will probably be the same. CZ
  • GE has a history of producing preproduction units that are slightly different than the production models, such as the 'AC4400EV' pre-ES44AC units. I'd like them to lower the hump a few inches so it is even with the cab roof and aux cab.

  • I think there are plenty of interested people who haven't seen this thread. Can you post a link in the Locomotives forum at http://cs.trains.com/trn/f/741.aspx?

  • Thanks.  I linked it on the locomotive forum.

  • So, I heard a rumor yesterday morning that the units failed going through the summit tunnel. They've been sitting in Roseville for a month now.
