To the right in this picture is a fire damaged locomotive. Any information on it, what caused the fire, location where it happened, type of locomotive, if crew got out O.K., ect.

I love the blue locomotives!!!!!!
So many scales, so many trains, so little time.....
Not to be totally off my rocker, but you CANT be serious? CSX actually uses real colors, and not just on their handrails! (plus, you Conrail fans, CSX keeps the red class lights!).
Alec
The burned unit in question is NS GP38-2 5531. And it was in black when she burned. The handrails on the rear of the unit are bent backwards toward the hood so I would guess a wreck. Here are a couple pics I took of it.

The ex Con above is endeed a straight GP38. There is only one running in active service and that is NS 2912.
Not sure what happened to 5531's crew but it hit a tanker truck in New Orleans,LA in 2004. In the comments of the picture below, one says it is scrap and another says it if going to rebuilt.

Hello all,
The burn't units at the Juniata Shops are NS 7143, 5531, 7138, 3284 and 9914. NS 7143 and 7138 both took the worst end of derailments, 5531 hit a tank truck running long-hood forward in New Orleans, NS 3284 (I am not sure of the situation), but it had been burn't in a place on the unit that is unsalvagable. NS 9914 was the victim to a collision that caused it to catch on fire. Norfolk Southern has alot of "crispy" units sitting around Juniata, waiting for their ultimate demise. It is a natural fact of railroading, some of your units will end up fried.....
To the person who said that these units look better than CSX - you're ridiculous. Not to cause any flack, but honest criticism may hurt. Please take your insults elsewhere if all you are going to do is bag on CSX for no good reason. Go to that pointless website CSX-sucks.com to continue your mindless mumbling about CSX. I'd like to set you down in the President's chair of CSX, and see how well of a job you do. Life is tough for railroads, and CSX takes the beating the worst because of negative publicity, that obnoxious and idiotic website that was aforementioned, and most of all, from people like you. So knock it off, CSX is doing good in this tough economy for railroads......
The same applies for GE. General Electric takes too much insult from railfans for no good reason. Just because your favorite railroad bought alot of EMD units, does not mean that GE is terrible at building locomotives. GE units used to be horrible, granted, back in the U-boat and early C-series era. Now look at them, EMD is near their death, with GE dishing out locomotives right and left. Face it, times change. The newer GE units go into the shops less than EMD units (look at the GEVOs as opposed to the SD90MACs). And to top it off, EMD units shoot just as much flames as GE units. Again, it is just negative publicity and "haters" that cause GE to get all of the attention. GE is an excellent builder, and their units (the widecabs) will be around for years to come. Maybe not the narrow noses, but definitely the widecabs. Very reliable. And get with the times, the EMD SD40-2 is on it's way out, face reality, all good things come to an end. One thing I will give EMD though, is that they have better trucks on their units....
And what RR do you work for? Work here for 5 minutes, and it would open your eyes. Negative publicity? Please. If the public only knew how theses companies were run... These railroads make money despite themselves. It's all about getting the most out of the least.
And sorry, but both the new EMDs (which is the SD70ace and M-2, BTW... the 90macs were a generation ago) and GEs have their own problems. Neither one are "good" and I had problems with both. They are so cheaply put thogether that they only run with the help of duct tape and prayer.
It's been fun. But it isn't much fun anymore. Signing off for now.
The opinions expressed here represent my own and not those of my employer, any other railroad, company, or person.t fun any
I strongly believe you are overdoing your opinions just to "get back" at me for what I said in my previous post. First off, the GEVO series is far superior to the latest EMD products. If the EMD units do compare to the GEVOs, then why have tons and tons more GEVO units been sold? Also, like I anticipated, a self-proclaimed employee of a railroad would come on here and talk about facts he thinks just standard railfans do not know. I understand that the GEVOs DO have problems, such as loading slow, I am just saying that they majorly beat the latest EMD products.
I am very aware that the railroads are only out there to make money. What I mean by 'negative publicity' is the fact that everyone starts rumors about these railroads. CSX, for example, is always picked on crucially. It is reality that they came in third place for safety, tie replacement and maintenance in the 2005-2006 FRA/AAR records, behind Amtrak and NS, and ahead of UP, BNSF and KCS. Why does CSX continually get picked on even after this? Because of people saying negative things about them, and because of that ridiculous website, CSX-sucks.com. That is what I mean by "negative publicity."
EDIT - I know that the SD90 series was released back in the 90's, I was just using them as an example. If you want me to use the new SD70ACe and SD70M-2 as examples to how EMD has gone downhill, so be it. Look at the number of these new SD70's compared to the number of GEVOs. Again, it shows that ever since the SD90 series was released in the 90's, EMD has gone the way of rubbish.....
That is correct. All I've heard from REAL engineers (on the CP,CN, and BNSF) is that the ACe's and M-2's are junk. They are still loud (despite the new Iso cab), the are rough, and they rattle just like the SD70MACs and M's. I love EMD, but the GEVO's are hands down superior, and will continue to be (just look at the sales, you dont have to be an employee to see the demand and output correlations!) just as long as EMD follows. Notice how EMD cowered into a corner and changed their windows to be interchangeable with GE's. Doesn't look like EMD can do much else now besides playing catch up. And for you crews, wouldn't you rather have a fridge (CSX) over an ice box(NS)?
Back at you for what??? Yes, the gevo's kick the new EMD's butt 30x over. They load a lot faster than dash-9s of old. But there is no comparison to old EMDs and the pre-gevo dash-9s.
Secondly, if you do not work for the railroad, how do you know these rumors are just rumors? It's not how safe a railroad is for these stats, it is about how much they can HIDE. For some reason you seem to be in love with csx. It is all the same railroad, just different colors of paint. Yes there are negative opinions of railroads - but they are well earned. Like I said... walk in my boots....

This is why real RR'ers & buffs can't get along. The buff lives in a fantasy world "where all is good & nice". While real RR'ers deal with the job.
