On Sunday, July 9, 2007 the Denver Rail Heritage Society (operators of the Platte Valley Trolley) will be offering special commerative runs of the Route 84 Excursion. This is due to the removal of trackage west of Knox Court for the beginning of the construction of the Regional Transportation District's West Corridor Light Rail Line.
The special runs will be made at 5:00 PM, 6:00 PM, 7:00 PM, and 8:00 PM and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Fares are $6.00 Adult, $4.00 Child/Senior.
The excursion operates over the former Denver Tramway Company Route 84 interurban line that operated from Denver, Colorado to Golden, Colorado until June, 1950. The line was originally built as the Denver, Lakewood & Golden Railway in 1890 then reorganizing as the Denver & Inter-Mountain Railroad in 1893. The D&I-M became a subsidiary of the Denver Tramway Company in 1909. The Rocky Mountain Railroad Club is currently restoring D&IM/Denver Tramway Company Car #25 (Woeber Carriage Company, Denver, 1911) at the Denver Federal Center in Lakewood, Colorado. This was the last car to operate on this line until June, 1950 and the only Denver Tramway car that was saved fully intact.
The current trolley, #1977, is a replica built by the Gomaco Trolley Company of Ida Grove, Iowa using vintage 1925 electrical components from Melbourne, Australia. An on-board Cummins/Kato diesel-electric generator provides the necessary 600 volts d.c. to operate the former Metropolitan-Vickers traction motors and lights. The Trolley is operated by an all-volunteer crew from the non-profit Denver Rail Heritage Society.
