Because when 844 was coupled to the train behind 4449, the train's symbol is "X844" implying that 844 is road power and that 4449 is a "helper" per say. The same would be true in reverse order. Steam locomotives and some early diesels were required to display the train symbol on their numberboards. It's an old steam era practice that was phased out once radio usage become wide spread. For the 844-4449 trip, it was most likely just for nostalga.

Union Pacific Directors Special May 18, 2007.  Tacoma to Everett, WA and return.

Northbound with SP 4449 at the point.

 

 

Southbound with UP 844 taking the lead.
