Found a video of the Alaska pupmobile in action in the 1920's - moving at a surprising rate of speed. Those doggies are enthusiastic! And, yes, I wouldn't doubt they pulled a dog sled in the Winter. Location is on the Seward Peninsula near Nome.

On first glance that dog-powered railroad seems so wrong in so many ways, but on the other hand the dogs don't seem to mind.

The elephant on shunting duty doesn't seem to mind either.

Dogs on the tracks!

Dog-powered railways. (douglas-self.com)

In India in World War 2 elephants were used for shunting on the Bengal & Assam, a narrow gauge line that was the main supply line to the front in Burma
