And that is from someone who doesn't like the GWR.

Very understandable.

There's plenty of American admirers of the Pennsylvania, the New York Central, the Santa Fe and the Union Pacific who'll admit grudging admiration of the magnificent steam locomotives produced by the Norfolk & Western!  Laugh

The Great Western Railway 'Castle Class'  was (and still is)  a  powerful class of locomotives.

And that is from someone who doesn't like the GWR.  Whistling  Big Smile

Yes.  As M636C says  'Pendennis Castle' is at Didcot.

Why is Pendennis Castle restricted to heritage-line operation only?

Pendennis Castle is currently preserved at Didcot in the hands of the Great Western Society. It has been restored to working order but will be confined to Heritage Railways. It hasn't worked since returning from Australia in 1999.

Thanks.  Then you must know that Lady Genny (or Jenny?) Greton, widow of Lord John Greton, who owned great Weatern 4-6-0 Pendennis Castle (where is it now?), managed the line for a time.

Daveklepper.     Your picture is either 'River Irt'  or 'River Esk'.

I have travelled on the R&ER  whenever I can.   'An affair'  I started early  1960s.

The scenery is breathtaking.  imo.

Next time in the U.K. try this one:

https://www.rhdr.org.uk/

I did it a few years ago and there is an old rail car used for a coastal defense battery during the last big show. It's a serious railway and school children still use it to get to school. Fascinating as Mr. Spock would say.

I rode on the I rode on the Ravenglass and Eskdale back in 1980. I am glad to see the "La'al Ratty" ( as the locals call it ) is still running. IIRC the turntable is at Dalegarth near Boot. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravenglass_and_Eskdale_Railway

I hope Steve's friend had time while in Cumbria to also visit the Lakeside and Haverthwaite.

What a neat picture!  I wouldn't mind having a set-up like that in my back yard!

Of course, it could only go about 25 feet and then have to back up.

"Ravensglass and Eckdale."  Sounds like places in a Harry Potter novel.  But of course, steam is magical anywhere you find it!
