Yes, I meant smokebox, of course! Thanks.
I corrected it.
Still in training.
Smokebox, not firebox?
The smokebox is at the front of the locomotive where exhaust steam directed by blastpipes up those twin stacks pulls a vacuum that draws combustion gases from the firebox at the cab end, through the boiler tubes and up those twin smoke stacks.
If GM "killed the electric car", what am I doing standing next to an EV-1, a half a block from the WSOR tracks?
That first photo is awesome! And the one with the two guys in the smokebox really shows how massive a Big Boy is.
Bring it on!

Great news!

I've heard rumors that 4014 has actually gone to the moon and back but NASA asked UP to keep quiet about it, seems they're a little upset at being upstaged by 1940's steam technology.
I just got this email this morning:
Union Pacific Steam Club Update No. 15 - May 10, 2021 We know you missed seeing our steam locomotives last year nearly as much as the UP Steam Team missed operating No. 844 and Big Boy No. 4014. We have great news, the Steam Team is busy planning an excursion for No. 4014, likely kicking off August. Stay tuned to the Steam Club for more information in the coming weeks as we finalize all of the details. Big Boy (Coin) In Space You may have seen this graphic on social media in recent days and wondered just what the heck it meant. Last month, Astronaut Megan McArthur piloted NASA's SpaceX Crew-2 to the International Space Station, and on board with her is a coin from Union Pacific's Steam Crew. McArthur's son loves trains, and she contacted the Union Pacific Railroad Museum for something train-related that she could take up into space. In honor of the 152nd anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, McArthur plans to show off the coin in space. Follow her on Twitter at @Astro_Megan or Instagram at astro.megan to see it happen! When McArthur's six-month mission ends, the coin will join the Union Pacific Railroad Museum's permanent collection in Council Bluffs, Iowa. That's all for now. Be safe, and we'll see you trackside (at least 25 feet away) later this summer! Union Pacific Steam Club
