MidlandMike Commuters ride the train every day and know what railroad they are riding, and might not even look up from their newspaper/phone to notice a heritage loco. Amtrak riders are infrequent, and Amtrak may want to keep their branding consistant.

Flintlock76 I'm trying to imagine a P32 with that Edgar Allen Poe custom treatment. As if a P32 isn't ominous enough as it is!

I'd go for an "Iron Man" treatment...
That NJT heritage locomotive looks amazing! Amtrak should do that with locomotives serving in the original railroads areas like NYC, NH and so forth. ConnDOT had those diesels painted in the old New Haven scheme and everyone survived. Why the hell not?

Wow. Obviously there's literate tagger out there.
It WOULD get people's attention though!
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Paul of Covington We could do it at no cost. Just turn a bunch of taggers loose.

Uh, yeah. Now THAT would be an attention getter!

Oh yeah Mod-man, that cool Jersey Transit Heritage unit!
And here's the thing, it was easy to do. That's not a paint job, it's a wrap.
The CNJ GP40 unit they did, THAT was a paint job.
Flintlock76Picture this, a PRR "Tuscan Red" with "cat's whiskers" on a P42 with "Amtrak" in "Railroad Roman" lettering for example.

Flintlock76Hey, I LIKE that idea! (Although it might need a better name, if you know what I mean!) And it might only need a paint shop visit to make it happen. Why not heritage paint schemes on the P42's reflecting all the great passenger carriers of the past? The actual road names wouldn't be needed either. Picture this, a PRR "Tuscan Red" with "cat's whiskers" on a P42 with "Amtrak" in "Railroad Roman" lettering for example.
How about this? Heritage schemes for Amtrak trainsets from locomotive to last car........now that would be really cool but that is too much to hope for as it would result in brand confusion, I believe.
I think you could put a pretty cool MoPac type eagle on the front of a P42 say with chrome background with some flair around it. On the side of the locomotive, name the loco like Burlington used to. Jazz it up a little before the ladder to the cab, then have the regular Amtrak stripe or billboard logo after the ladder to the cab. You could do it cheaply I think.
It may be an attention-getter because of the sheer absurdity of it all. I doubt that it would attract too many passengers.
You all have seen popup ads for those t-shirts with the 3D effect -- with a picture of your cat on them, but making it look like it is leaping off your lap?
With that 3D effect technology, they could decorate a Genesis locomotive to look like a T1? A J3a? A K4?
Yeah, it costs money, but I think this would be a serious attention getter?
If GM "killed the electric car", what am I doing standing next to an EV-1, a half a block from the WSOR tracks?
CMStPnPAmtrak needs to have a "Pimp my P42" contest systemwide.

Flintlock76We've discussed this in the past, and yeah, they probably could if they really, really, really wanted to. It wouldn't be all that difficult to build an up-to-date version, but the fact of the matter is the only people it would matter to are the railfans. Most Amtrak passengers could care less what the locomotive looks like as long as it gets them where they want to be. Still, we can dream, can't we?
It's going into my letter to the Congressional Committee on Transportation.
Amtrak needs to have a "Pimp my P42" contest systemwide. For adding chrome a better paint design, perhaps a stylized art deco Eagle on the nose, and other accruments to improve the cosmetic appearance of their locomotives and give an impression of speed, comfort, style and class. Entries to be judged by professional design and appearance criteria as well as to market impression value it brings to the Amtrak brand.
Winner of the contest gets a free RT LD Ticket to any destination in the United States.
CMStPnP Just think if Amtrak could buy a loco that looked like this!!!!
