For those that were saying that 4014 would under her own power ever again. This was recorded by a railfan that has literally taken to camping on the walkway that overlooks the Steam Shop according to my buddy in the steam program. The reasons why they missed their deadline for last year parts delivery problems and then a more severe winter than expected. My friend spent 2 months this winter on Donner running rotory plows trying to keep that open instead of doing his primary job which was getting 4014 up and running. Yes he is tried as hell but guess what she lives again and today is the break in run according to him.

Here's a video from inside the shop: https://www.reddit.com/r/trains/comments/bjznw3/big_boy_4014_moves_under_its_own_power/?st=jv7526vm&sh=2bb5a13c
Don't you love that "steamboat" whistle?
Well done, UP Steam Team, well done indeed. God bless you all!
And I mean that with all reverance and sincerity!
And from what I can see from Trainmaster's linked "Reddit" video it looks BETTER than new!
Who says the age of heroes has passed? Not me! That shop building's full of them!
Somewhere in the great beyond David P. Morgan, Jim Boyd, Howard Fogg, Phil Hastings, Lucius Beebe, Charles Clegg, Jim Shaunessey, and so many others are toasting this event with Lucius' best champagne.
Jim Boyd said a Big Boy would run again someday. Why? As he so eloquently put it...
"Like Mount Everest, because it's there!"
He was right. He was SO right!
PS: All those involved in the project should have their names cast into a bronze plaque permanently fixed to the engineer's side of the tender so they'll NEVER be fogotten. How about it UP?

I echo those same sediments, Well done!! Union Pacific, well done. The whistle blasting is a tribute to everyone at the up and to all that tended to the big boys starting in 1941 to the end of steam and now beyond.
It's been quite a journey.
This was recorded 3 days before on the 27th of April, waking up the whistle and stretching it's legs...not sure how the engine got outside of the shop in this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0BrClWQUmE
She wasn't finished then. No pistons, valve gear, etc. So she didn't exit under her own power for that, unlike last night.
I assume a diesel pulled her out or a Trackmobile.
Never too old to have a happy childhood!
Here is a short clip of 4014 heading out of Cheyenne yard today 05/02/19 from Jim Wrinn.
The Biggest There Ever Was is The Biggest There Ever Was again!
The Big Boy rolls in to view about 30 seconds in, deep in the yard.
If multiple videos pop up it is the one that is about 5 minutes.
Don’t be fooled by the bush at the beginning - the camera is pointed down.
Push “play” and you won’t be disappointed!

Beautiful!
Like an opera singer warming up.
I didn't know you had to "wake up" or "break in" a whistle. What was actually happening? I didn't see that anyone was physically doing anything to it.

Wonderful!!
THANK YOU!!
To so many.
It's been said that the whistle sounded that way a few days ago from there being a lot of water in the superheaters from the recent hydro test. Once that was cleared away by pushing it through the whistle, it started sounding like it should.
Yep! Looks better than new!
Looks like Mr. Jim's camera work was a little shaky, but I can't blame him. Probably due to to excitement. We'd all be shaky if we were there.
Thanks Mr. Jim!
I just found this on the You Tube, or more accurately it found me! Drone footage of 4014's test run. Responsible drone footage. Nice!
