Sorry, but bake sales and the like won't cut it.  What's needed are some real professional fund raisers who know how to deal with the major foundations.  That's where the money is.

I think most  successful museums have grown beyond bake sales, even those run by old fifty plus old covers ( lol )

I hear the term "Crowd Funding" from my techie freinds all the time...Since most railroad museums are runs by folks over 50 how could we use or embrace the crowd funding concept in addition to our bake sales
