Anyone know how many were done, and if one has managed to survive? Here's a site about one such locomotive.

I know of at least three conversions besides this one. One Shay in Washington, one in Virginia, and Canadian Forest Products had a similarly converted Climax. But unfortunately, I know little else on this topic.
Edit: And literally seconds after hitting the submit button, I found this. So strike this topic...

Nice looking loco! Almost looks as if it was intended to be that way.
I recall seeing, many years ago, a 'home brewed' Shay conversion done at some logging company's shop. It looked rather like some corrugated tin chicken houses from a poverty-level farm...

It looks like they took a Whitcomb with burned out traction motors, jacked it up at the frame and installed new running gear.
WOW! I never knew that something like this existed. It is like something that Sam Berliner would dreamed up.
Why God Why? WTF "What The Freak"?

That looks like what would be one of the more conservative designs from the BerlinerWerke - would be interesting to see the Berlinerwerke dieselized enhanced Pacific Coast Shay.
Yes it would, why don't you tell him! :)
