PTC Excursion Car
Posted by NorthWest on Sunday, June 29, 2014 5:05 PM

With the coming PTC deadline, preserved vehicle excursions (such as 765's mainline trips) will somehow be affected. As a solution, I propose a PTC/Tool Car.

Because we'd like to avoid any modifications to preserved locomotives, it seems best to have PTC equipment in a car behind the locomotive that is able to apply the train's air brakes independently if the train exceeds its authority. (They cannot be uncoupled while on the main) While the locomotive can still presumably struggle ahead, it would be much harder, giving time to rectify the problem. I suggest a small tablet sized control module that would temporarily attach to the cab side by magnets. The rest of the PTC car could house tools and spare parts.
