The 229 has been restored cosmetically and looks great! Talk about restoring steam to it is always "floating" around. Of the three remaining Yellowstones, the one in T.H. is in the best shape. The only problem is, if it was brought back to life, it couldn't go far. The overpass bridges in T.H. and at Knife River have been replaced and would not carry 229's weight, So the most it could go is about 7 miles to Knife River. With this limitation I can't see it becoming any more than the show queen it is now.

I have to hand it to Todd Lindal of T.H. for organizing the efforts to make the 229 and the # Spot look mighty pretty. There were many people and companies that worked on and donated to both projects. Great job Todd!

No issue with bridges. Lakefront Line bridges are all rated for 50,000 pounds per axle. Not sure what the T.H. overpass is rated for but I would assume the same as all the other bridges on the line, which should be the standard which I mentioned.

No. Would make no sense to restore that one anyway. It was just cosmetically restored, which is most likely what he was talking about.

Thanks Jim, I have been going up there from the Twin Cities for 40 years and just see it as a travesty. UP has a lot of money to do 4014, and 229 would have to be done by a  museum like Duluth to get it done.

 I knew my father in law couldn't be quite right...too much money and not enough interest. Maybe 4014 project might change that

Concerning a Yellowstone, I'm reminded of something the late Jim Boyd said:

"Will a Big Boy run again?  Of course!  Why?  Well, like Mount Everest, because it's there!"  And so it will come to pass.

So, you never know about a Yellowstone, do you?

  The last I heard was the funding was for cosmetic work on the engine and the roof over it.  I have heard of no plans to restore any of the 3 remaining Yellowstones.

Hi, I am new here and just starting out. My Father in-law was recently in Two Harbours and was chatting the folks up, and someone mentioned they are fund raising to get the 229 Yellowstone alive. I told him they MUST be talking about Big Boy 4014, but he refused to think they where talking about 4014.

 Is there any rumour of the big 229?
