U.P's Cheyenne steam shop

Some pics from last weekend at U.P.'s steam shop. 844 is undergoing some maintinence, but the steam crew assured us it would be back on the rails in a few weeks.The pics aren't the best, as I just had my cell phone and the light was poor...

Hey, no problem with the pictures.  They're pretty much the first pictures I've seen so far of the 2013 open house.

So did they have any info on the 3985? Or for that matter, the 4014?

3985 is awaiting boiler repairs, I was told it'll be 2014 at least before it runs again.

I didn't think to ask about the Big Boy rumors (kicking myself for that one!)

I doubt they would've told anybody anything about the 4014.  Oh well.

But the 3985 might be ready by 2014?  Last I heard the earliest it would be running was 2016.

Where's their other two steamers? The 838 that they kept for parts and the 2-10-2?

Hope somehow that 4-8-4 gets preserved someday for static display. Have they been keeping the major worn out components of the 844 when they swap something out with the 838 to increase the possibility of her being put on static display someday when her role as a parts supply is finished someday?

Thanks for sharing, these are a great peek at 844 in the shop.  One question, on the cab interior shot, what is hanging in front of the fire-box door (which is covered in canvas)?

838 is the last photo.

The 2-10-2, the 5511, I believe, is still in the roundhouse.  I still wonder why UP keeps it stored instead of giving it away or at least displaying it.  It's in great condition for a static locomotive, UP doesn't want to restore it to operation, and if UP follows through with the 4014, they're gonna need some more room.

I've heard talk of eventually donating the 838 when they're done with it.  However, since 844 will run until it's mechanically impossible to keep her going, that may be some time.

Now that I'm studying the 3985 photo, it appears that she's in the roundhouse?  If so, she's definitely on the back burner.

The 5511 had her piston rods cut. And I imagine some of her other components are gone. But I would think she'd make a great exhibit in the place of the 4014 if that deal happens. Especially if they put up a shelter for her as part of the trade. She's one of only eight survivors of that wheel arrangement in the US and Canada and she's large and impressive in her own right. 

But it would be a shame for a locomotive that has been inside for the majority of her retirement to be left exposed to the elements at this point.

I can't recall where, but I remember someone saying UP didn't want to trade the 5511 for 4014.
