It's a two-cyl recip engine, fixed cutoff (i.e. only works going forward). A gear moves into mesh to connect it to the gear on the axle-- no clutch, tho.

I was closely looking at the C&O 619 the other day in Clifton Forge, trying to see the booster but, it's enclosed couldn't see anything.  Just curious as to the type of engine that it is.  Is it a reciprocating engine or a steam turbine.  And how was it connected to the wheels, did it have an overriding clutch or was there a transmission that disengaged?  Thanks
