Silverton Nortrhern Reconstruction?
Posted by ZSmith on Friday, December 4, 2009 9:18 PM

Tonight I found photos online of the Silverton Northern enginehouse and main line reconstruction. Can anyone fill me in with some info? I haven't been able to find anything, is it just a short spur to the D&S or an actual reconstruction of the line?

Thanks, for sharing the link;

                                                 The photos of the narrow gauge around the Silverton area. Nagraph's collection ( Fritz Klinke)  from those of the 1950's foward to current is amazing. Lots of shots of the narrow gauge equipment and locomotives that few of us get to see.

                                                 I hope that you or others will be able to share what is going on in Silverton with relationship to the rebuilding (additional trackage) of the Silverton Northern.  What are the long range or short term plans with regards to the rebuilding?   I would suspect that there are others here on thhis Forum that woud really like to know more, and look forward to seeing and hearing more from Colorado Narrow Gauge Railroading.

 The SN enginehouse was reused as a garage after the SN was abandoned in the 1930s.  It's possible to reconnect the enginehouse to the Durango & Silverton (former D&RGW Silverton Branch).  Beyond that, the land was sold and repurposed, and the SN grade from Silverton through Howardsville and Eureka to Animas Forks was mostly repurposed as the county road, so reconstruction would be tough.

I don't know what the immediate plans are beyond restoring the enginehouse.

RWM:.

           Thanks for the information! The first poster (Z. Smith) indicated he had found the photo link on line, and was wanting some additional information.

           As you know, the D&S line ended in Silverton. Lines, beyond Silverton were long gone. Having made a couple of trips to Silverton, some yars back; I found if of interest that any railroad construction in Silverton was interesting.   And the first few pages of photographs by "Nagraph" did show recent construction involving the reconstructed two stall engine house, and track construction surrounding that structure.   My hope in adding to the thread was that a recent visitor to Silverton with knowledge of what was taking place and possibly why; could respond with that information.    Possibly, maybe, even a local resident of the area who might have some knowledge of what the intentions of the construction were could also respond.

  The Flickr link (to Nagraph, J Klinke's photos) has intersperced with the photos of hsi interest in vintage printing equpment; quite a number of photos of activities and interest in subjects of the D&S RR ( nee DRG&WRR).       Again, I was hoping possibly, someone might respond.      "Doublestack" , a week or so posted, asking for information on the C&TS RR. He indicated he wanted to do some research for a possible trip to "Narrow Gauge" country.

 Any sign of interest or growth in the narrow gauge railroads, is a good sign, I think, and planning a trip to Colorado to visit that area woud be something that my wife and I might want to do.

it would be a real enhancement for a trip, if there was new equipment, or a new addition to the area to add interest to the trip.

Enquiring minds,are sure curious!!

 Anyone with more info, Please fill us in--THANKS!

 This link to the Silverton yahoo group is probably your best bet:

http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Silverton/?yguid=24474677

 So far it is just a reconstruction of the SN enginhouse connection to the ex D&RGW Silverton branch so that restored D&RGW locomotive 315 (formerly in a Durango park -- see http://www.drhs315.org/index2.htm), railcar Casy Jones and any other equipment can have access the main line. There is talk of proceeding further, but so far, I believe it is just talk.

The 315 was stored there last winter, but I don't think it is there currently.
