C&O 614 with 100 coal cars @ 60MPH

This short video shows the 4-8-4 C&O 614 during the 1985 coal tests in West Virginia. She is pulling 100 coal cars at 60 MPH with no additional help. Sound and video isn't the greatest, but still impressive. It was well below zero, and you can really see how much water the 614's massive boiler can evaporate at speed.

Yeah, and who is the dude in the pickup truck cutting in front of this train just seconds before the train reaches the crossing?

If GM "killed the electric car", what am I doing standing next to an EV-1, a half a block from the WSOR tracks?

Aw, it wasn't that close. The dude in the truck had a least 6 seconds to spare before he was crushed by the 900,000 lbs. 614, an auxiliary tender, an instrument car, and 100 coal cars traveling a mile a minute. He had nothing to worry about. Probably didn't see or hear it approaching. LOL.

Maybe he just wanted to get a closeup of what raw power feels like when it comes thru your door.  Lousy video?  Yeah, but who cares,.  Great performance!!!.

Is the St. Albans vid EB or WB?  I'm familiar with the other locations in related videos.

Train is westbound. Location is between the 5th Street Crossing and the bridge over the Big Coal River in downtown St. Albans WV.

The 30 min. video of 614's winter test runs (part of creating the new ACE 3000 steam engine) was one of the first train videos I bought, back in the mid-eighties. I'll have to dig that out and watch it again, it's great to see all that steam in the cold air. Smile
