4449 Route Question
Posted by ErikWP on Monday, July 6, 2009 11:06 AM

Does anyone know specifics about the route for the 4449 from Milwaukee to Chicago?

How about the Display location during the Chicago visit?

What is your source of information?  There seems to be unanimous confusion on this point and the trip web site does not help.

The route from thne Twin Cities to Chicago is the old Burlington -- down the east bank of the river, through LaCrosse, East Dubuque, Savanna and so on.  You can verify that on 261's web site.  It will not go through Milwaukee at all.

The return trip, however, is the route of the Empire Builder so it will go through Milwaukee.  It is scheduled to lay over there on the night of August 2nd.

As of a couple of days ago, the SP 4449 web site indicated no decision was made on display in Chicago.

To put to rest any speculation on the TWIN CITIES to CHICAGO routing for the SP 4449 on SAT 7-18-09 here it is from the OFFICIAL MILW 261 website. It reports the same thing I have see posted elsewhere as a BNSF routing via East Bank of the river thru LA CROSSE WI--ROCHELLE IL--AURORA IL--CHICAGO IL .

Now onward to that OFFICIAL website of the MILW 261 group:

This summer the "Friends of the 261" in cooperation with "The Friends of the SP 4449", the Steam Railroading Institute, Amtrak, CN and BNSF Railway will operate steam excursion trains with Southern Pacific "Daylight" 4-8-4 steam locomotive 4449 to Durand, Michigan. The trips are a ferry move for 4449 to travel to TrainFestival 2009, a gathering of steam locomotives in Owosso, Michigan which will run from July 23 to 26, 2009. This historic locomotive is making its first journey to the U.S. Midwest since it pulled the American Freedom Train in the 1970s.

On Saturday, July 18, 2009, No. 4449 will head from Minneapolis to Chicago on BNSF. After an overnight stay, on Sunday July 19 the train will depart for Durand, Michigan, on Canadian National's ex-Grand Trunk Western route, arriving at the famous Durand Union Depot. All trips will include coach and premium class. Premium class includes reserved seating in Milwauke Road Skytop observation "Cedar Rapids" and Super Dome 53.

On Friday, July 31, the train will depart Durand for Chicago. After a one-day layover in Chicago, it will depart for Milwaukee on August 2, stay overnight and travel from Milwaukee to Minneapolis on August 3rd. Tickets for these trips may be ordered by U.S. Mail by downloading and printing the PDF order form by clicking here

4449 then is going to be in the Twin Cities for about a month, I'm guessing having some work done at 261's shop in Minneapolis. Then it's running on some "fall color" excursion trains down the Mississippi, I've already got my ticket !!

What is St.Paul "SUB"? Is that near downtown and the river?

SUB means subdivision. It's going to take the normal Amtrak Empire Builder route except it won't be going to Midway Amtrak station but to 261's shop across the river north of downtown Mpls.
