S.P. Sacramento Shops, Old Boilers 8-8-08

I took this photo on November 8th while aboard the U.P. Business train leaving Sacramento. Interesting collection of old boilers!

 Yes. I took it yesterday when I was on the U.P. business car train. There are numerous piles of boilers and other items they've dug up. The train left from the old C.P. Station in Old Town Sacramento and went through the northside of the shops where it looks like they were doing extensive environmental remediation. The U.P. build a special diamond to allow the train to cross the main line just east of the bridge.

Very interesting, although what you've photographed are inner fireboxes, not complete boilers. Some of them appear to be Belpaires, judging by the flat crownsheets. Were these from loco boilers, I wonder?

I suspect the boilers may be from one of the shop's or roundhouse's early powerhouses, although they easily could be locomotive-oriented.  It was also announced that an alleged "original" Central Pacific trestle had been unearthed in a sinkhole and that preservationists were digging to uncover more of it.  They were to tak samples of the wood and take photos before covering it back up.  Apparently, and according to the museum folks it is unsalvageable and not a candidate for any kind of preservation.
