Forgot to mention that the final step was a light spray of DullCote, which always seems to add a bit of realism.

Your query would get better results if you posted in the model railroader forum. However, I can give you some input......
Several years ago Andy Sperandeo (spell) did an article on this in MR. As I model the ATSF in the 50s, I decided to try my luck at it too. I ended up with 9 of the kits, and added KD couplers, precision scal marker lights w/jewels(#31334), intermountain wheelsets, weathered trucks, and decals from Champion (not sure). I did some detail painting on the handrails, and painted the inside of the window glazing a blue color (looks good) as I didn't want to add interior lights. The results were exceptionally nice, and they are noticed even by the non-railroaders that see them.
