Well too late now (I just heard about this trip, and the recent photographer's special - dang!) but normally when coming from Chicago 261 goes on CP's former Milwaukee line on the west bank of the Mississippi all the way up to Hastings, where it crosses over to the east bank for the last few miles to the Twin Cities.
I understand they're doing a trip this fall where 261 will go down the west bank and cross at LaCrosse WI and come back on the former CNW UP line up the east bank, but I assume that will cross the St.Croix at Prescott WI area and continue up the east bank of the Mississippi.

Someone at trainorders.com said they will leave Milw tomorrow mid morning, without a diesel.

That was the one I believe, though I don't remember what the name of the movie is off hand.

It was in town to film a movie at Chicago Union Station over the weekend. Unfortunately it's already headed towards home. It's overnighting in Milwaukee tonight (Tuesday), and will continue towards home on Wednesday.
I was working in the South Loop when I heard a steam locomotive whistle. I used my lunch break to hunt down the source, and found Milwaukee Road 261 in the Amtrak yards! It only had 5 cars or so behind it, and I didn't see anything about a Chicago trip on the 261 website, so I'm wondering why it's in Chicago...private excursion perhaps?
Anybody know why it's in town? More importantly, any know when it's leaving town? Hopefully I can get some pics of it on its way north.
