NY Central Preservation
Posted by SW 1200 on Sunday, May 11, 2008 4:17 PM

Many years ago, my grandmother lived near the NY Central tracks that passed through Calumet City, Illinois, near Hammond, Indiana.  On her property she had a step stool that had been the property of the NY Central RR.  These step stools were used to board trains.  I have seen similar step stools in vintage films that show old time passenger operations.  The step stool that my grandmother possesed had NY CENTRAL RAILROAD stamped on the top.  The step stool was metal and was manufactured with safety type preforations on the surfaces for non slip.

Does anybody know what these step stools were called?  Was there a name for them?

I really would be interested in finding and purchasing one.  Knowing exactly what they were called would help my search.  Any information appreciated.

Thanks.

Larry,

Thank you for the information.  I would love to get one of these; would be a great reminder of all the happy times spent at Grand Ma's house by the NYC tracks.
