E&LS "collection" roster of equipment
Posted by Thomas Tancula on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 2:04 AM
I know that the E&LS has a large collection of locomotives and cars stored under roof, lock and key at the former Harnishfenger plant in Escanaba. Does any one have a list of the equipment stored there?

I know they have the last of the Baldwin sharks, but they are "always" kept indoors and out of view. This is due to the fact that sombody broke in and stole a bunch of builders plates and manuals for the locos.
Highball....Train looks good device in place!!

Last I knew, the WICT (lettered for the Janesville and Southeastern) 106, WICT 102b and WICT 901 were both at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay. Were they moved or something? The last time I saw them was a few years ago, so I don't have any recent information.

And the WICT 96A is on the E&LS, in a roundabout way, but not stored. The WICT 96A was bought by the WSOR when the WICT was bought, and became WSOR 71A. In 2004, the WSOR sold the 71A to the E&LS, who re-numbered it the ELS 600. It still retains it's WSOR paint job with the lettering removed. Last I knew (which was as of a couple of months ago), it was still being used in regular freight service somewhere on the E&LS system.

I'm certain the 106, 901, 102b were sold to ELS . I'm not certain however ,that they have been moved from the Green Bay site.

That could be. And it's certainly possible they could have already been moved too, I really don't know for sure. The last time I was up there was a few years ago, though I did see photos of the units at the museum this spring. Any idea when they were sold? You've got me curious.

They must have been sold better than a year ago , I believe the 2 BL-2s are still owned by the same owner and on display at Green Bay .

Interesting you'd bring this back up Max, as there's a update to the topic.

The former WICT F units were pulled from the National Railroad Museum this week. They left yesterday on the ELS train out of Green Bay for points North. Their fate isn't certain, but the talk is either that one of them will be restored to run with the ELS 600 (the former WSOR/MILW FP7), or possibly all of them could be put back into service. Apparently at least one or two of them have some mechanical problems that would have to be worked out.

Or of course the other possibility could be that they are simply being moved to a new storage location. Time will tell what happens I guess.

As for the "collection" of Baldwin diesels, the Sharks are supposedly in indoor secure storage; however, the rest of the Baldwin fleet of RS12 and DS4-4-1000 locos were stored outside in various stages of disrepair and cannibalization, as I recall from a 2004 visit.  The original 100, a VO1000, was scrapped in 1974.  The storage fleet was in open storage on private property, but ironically a public road to a dock was opened up right alongside the "dead line" back around 2003, and the stuff is (well, was) easily seen from public property.  As I read down my list, the only Baldwins that COULD have been in the building would have been the Sharks, DS4-4-1000 202, and in-service-last-I-knew RS12 300.
