Valley Railroad #40 Back Under Steam
Posted by DMUinCT on Sunday, July 22, 2007 9:54 AM

I was down at Essex CT Friday.  WOW

#40 was back in service after a four year complete rebuild. A 2-8-2 Mikado built by ALCO's Brooks Works in 1920 looked like it just left the factory.  Rebuilt right down to a whole new Fire Box!  They had been using the 2-8-0 #97 until Friday.   The gold "pin stripes" still need to be added back to complete the package.

The "Train and Boat Ride" runs you down to Deep River behind steam, then you transfer to a Connecticut River Boat, cruse for an hour, and then back on the train, a total 2 1/2 hours.
