Railroad attractions in Pennsylvania

Hi Lithonia Operator. I saw your post in the General Discussion Forum and thought you had some folks reply with good suggestions there. I am glad you are going to Honesdale to see/ride the Stourbridge Line. Definitely worth a visit. The historical museum in Honesdale has a replica of the Stourbridge Lion, which was the first steam locomotive to operate on commercial rails in the US -- in 1829. The museum is located in the original headquarters of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company, which became the Delaware & Hudson Railway. Lots of history there worth checking out. There is no good hotel in Honesdale - but a couple of decent ones can be found in nearby Hawley. Otherwise stay in Scranton.

I also saw that someone mentioned the trolley museum and steamtown in Scranton. Both worthwhile. The Delaware Lackawana RR, headquartered in Scranton, also features an all-Alco locomotive roster, which is fun to see these days.

Looking forward to Honesdale and the rest of the trip, which includes Steamtown and Strasburg, among other places.

In Honesdale, we were eyeing the Hotel Wayne, but it looks like it might be a little sketchy. Instead we wound up with an Airbnb place.

Horseshoe Curve. Love to see two pulling a freight and two pushing up the grade.Diesel parked there now. Use to be a steamer. Handicap accessible up to the track level.

Couple more places not too far away that I have been to.

Google, Seldom Seen Coal mine for a ride in a coal mine. Three foot wide track  electric coal mine ride. Overhead power line. I assume not high volatge. Easily reached. I forgot to ask.

Seldom seen shut down for good last year. 

Scranton has a nice coal mine tour, and they are just a stone's throw away from Steamtown.

THe Seldon Seen was a rough ride. No springs on the cars and not many people.

Punxsutawney was not too far. Being from New England, went and had a talk. with Phil. Did no good. lol

It has been seven years since I have been there. Never was aware of that coal mine in Scranton. The Back Shop tour I thought was the best.

I just learned there is a railroad museum in Hamburg, but haven't been there yet.
