Best Train Watching in southern Wisconsin

Grand Crossing in North LaCrosse would be one for close-up viewing. BNSF, CP, and Amtrak.

If you golf, BNSF cuts through the public course in LaCrosse. Have seen three, four trains during the course of a round.

This is not the answer that you wanted, but there is no better place than Rochelle, Ilinois. My wife and I will be at the Comfort suites in Aurora, Illinois, Motels for train Watchers) tonight and tomorrow on to Rochelle for the evening. We like Sturtevant. But once you have been to Rochelle.......nothing else even compares. I have seen 7 trains in 45 minutes there.....and two trains stopped on one railroad waiting for a train to by on the other railroad (like a 4-way stop on a highway).......A bad day train-watching is better than a good day at work..........Enjoy!

Butler yard is one US45 west side of town, exit 45 I think (hampton Ave), go west, road goes over yard - small yard and engine terminal - UP. You can also try Duplainville junction - I94 westof town, exit 295, go north to Duplainville road, right on Duplainville to tracks. It is a crossing of former Wisconsin Central (now CN?) and former Milwaukee road twin cities line (now CP?). You can't get real close to the diamonds. There is a tavern with food right next to the tracks on Duplainville road. There are a few other spots to watch the north/south line if you continue north on Duplainville. I'm not familiar with the spots in Milwaukee or to the south, but this should give you a start.

Looking for an assist, what is the best train watching spot in the southern half of Wisconsin? Wyalusing state park, milwaukee (whereabouts), stevens point, sturedvant? Most of us don't get a lot of time, and want the best of it on the rare occasion you can go trackside with a book for a while.
