The Old Fort line is still in operation. It is the NS main line between Linwood yard near Salisbury and the Asheville yard. Saluda in not in operation now. The rails are in place and it is being maintained to a certain level. There has been some talk about reopening the line but so far nothing has changed.

As far as I know, the Old Fort line is still operating. It is the Saluda grade (4.7%) that was shut down.[:(]

That is a beautiful part of the country. A couple of years ago I spent the night at Asheville on the way to Emerald Isle. Stopped in at Old Fort and toured the old depot.
Is there much access to the loops area between Asheville and Old Fort? Looks pretty interesting on the map.

Saluda is not open but is being maintained at minimal levels. That most recent post was about a wash out that had recently occured. It is the steepest in the east........
Between Asheville and Linwood there were anywhere from 7 to 15 trains daily earlier this summer.
