There's A Lot Of Abandoned Trackage, Including Street Trackage Downtown, Plus An Abandoned Roundhouse And I Haven't Seen The Magazine Yet So I Can't Comment...But That's What I Remember About Living In Portland--It Was This Big Yard And It Went Underneath This Big Main Highway.

Yea, I like that idea. I would like to see a detailed map of Indiana, say 1950, compared to 2000. I live in Michigan, but I think Indiana has been the hardest hit with abandonments. I would also like to see a feature on Chicago. Northern Indiana was at one time a paradise. Now, you will cross more abandoned roadbeds, than you will active lines.

What I would like to see is the routes for long gone (but not forgotten) interurbans.

Try southern Indiana. Milwaukee Road between Bedford and Westport - GONE. Milwaukee Road between Bedford and Oolitic - GONE. Monon between Bedford and Bloomington - GONE. B&O between Bedford and Rivervale - GONE. Bedford & Bloomfield (Monon) - GONE. Monon between Bedford and Walner - GONE. Milwaukee Road between main line and Gaberson - GONE. B&O between Rivervale and Stonington - GONE. Monon between Orleans and West Baden Springs - GONE. The Monon ran passenger trains between Chicago and Louisville until 1967. Amtrak ran between Chicago and Fla (on Monon Tracks through Ind.) until about 1978. The B&O ran between Baltimore and St. Louis until 1971 and the Milwaukee Road ran several passenger trains between Terre Haute and Seymour (including a one car Budd unit). Plus, old time runs between Bedford and Bloomfield and Bedford and Rivervale (mainline of the B&O). Now, all that remains is the Canadian Pacific through Bedford and the CSX through Mitchell. It was a dark day for southern Ind. when CSX was formed.

Line relocations shouldn't be ignored. There is a short stretch of abandoned right-of-way on the far South Side of Chicago where the Calumet Western Railway (IHB operated over it) relocated to share CWI's bridge over the Calumet River after its own bridge was hit and put out of commission by a freighter in 1962.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

I do belive Indiana and Chicago have been hit hardest Missouri has a lot and so does ohio i found some old rail out side toledo Oh years back
also SP abandoned its old line between MT Pleasent Tx & FT Worth Tx

Where I live at there are two old branches the catskill mt branch and the wallkill branch. sadly, the wallkill branch was riped up (some turned into Rail Trail) but the catskill branch was owned by the county. To my knowage I heard that ther're were going to restore the line up until Kingston But that was less likely.[banghead][:(][xx(]
