Road trip to Pamona Ca.
Posted by cessna 310 on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 10:37 AM

I'm driving fom St. Louis, MO to Williams, AZ then on to Pamona after visiting the South Rim. I'll be following parts of Rte 66.

Any good locations along the "TransCon" and down the I-15 corridor.

Thanks for the help.

My favorite spot along the Transcon is the Posada Hotel (it's also the Amtrak station) in Winslow, AZ.  It's at the east end of the yard where the trains line up waiting their turn onto the mainline.  Chairs and shade are provided.  If you want to stay at the refurbished former Harvey House, book far ahead.

Be sure to spend some time in Kingman Canyon. If you want to see some desert running, drive on old 66 between Lenwood and Victorville.

Cajon Pass is a must-see if you haven't been, especially Summit and 'Hill 582'. The latter may be an uphill hike if the road is bad.

Downtown Pomona doesn't see any BNSF traffic, but UP can be busy if the timing is right.
