If you look for designated campgrounds in the Powder River Basin you will not find any. "Dispersed camping" is allowed on most BLM land, and the BLM's Thunder Basin National Grassland occupies a significant amount of real estate in the Basin.I have camped there a number of times with no problems, although twice I have looked for an old campsite with a view of the tracks only to find a brand new oil well there.

I knew friends that have gone hunting out west, and were kicked off BLM public range land by ranchers.  Maybe they would have less problem with campers, but I would not count on it.  I would look for designated campgrounds.

Hi guys,

a friend and i are going to make a trip to the Powder River Basin in early May. While we are going in the area between Doulgas and Gillette, i was wondering about puplic camping there? I have learned that camping is allowed on public ground in WY, but any tips and hints would be appreciated.

Thanks, Michael
