Watching UP in Tucson
Posted by Super-C on Thursday, December 3, 2015 3:27 PM

Watching trains in and around Tucson, AZ can be a problem. First, there is the almost ever-present sun, often generating uncomfortable temperatures and causing major damage to exposed skin. Then there is the problem of the yards being bounded on one side by a major thoroughfare and on the other by an overgrown forest of shrubbery covering the chain-link fence. And while it is true that the Amtrak station has a coffee shop, there are very few suitable places with an unobstructed view to spend an entire afternoon watching UP do its stuff.

There is, however, an elegant solution to the problem. There is a place that is shaded all morning and afternoon, offers excellent refreshments, has nice restrooms, doesn't mind railfans, has comfortable seating and plenty of free parking ... the porch of the Nimbus Brewery in the cul-de-sac on 44th just east of Dodge, right next to the tracks. Sweet.
