A friend and I want to do some rail photography while we are on a trip to Madison next month. Particularly interested in the Wisconsin & southern. We are seeking where and when advice, so far striking out. Could the trains community please help?

One place you can try is the W&S yard area. As you approach Madison on HWY 151 from Sun Prairie, you'll be on E. Washington after you go under the I90/94 overpass. Drive E. Wash to E. Johnson St. It'll take three, maybe four miles. Don't know the exact distance. Ella's Deli, with it's sizable merry-go-round will be on the right just before you reach Johnson. Turn right onto Johnson, and drive it until it "ends". Turn left onto the curving median-separated street. (It's still Johnson, but if you turned right, it would be Pennsylvania). The yard office service road will be on your right just before you reach the two sets of RR tracks. The CP end-of-track is to the right, and the W&S is on your left. At the next road crossing (north end of the yards, Commercial Ave.) is part of the former Northwestern roundhouse, which has been converted into offices. Another point of interest would be the former Milw. Road depot seven/eight blocks southwest of the Capitol on WEST Wash. http://www.waymarking.com/waymarks/WMDDQK_West_Madison_Depot_Madison_Wisconsin Hope this helps.
