Why not go there and do a Trackside Guide. They have real good places to watch trains including the Amtrak platform.

Fostoria is an Intersting Place. My dad and I have been there several times in the last few years. I'm from around northern Cincinnati, i have never seen that many track or trains in my 15 years of living....LOL.

If any body needs Info about that area, I can hook you up

Fostoria is nice, so is Bellevue, Ohio. There is a nice museum track side.

I spent two days in Fostoria, Findlay, Bellevue, Deshler and Marion Sept 18th,19th.
If you have choice go Friday Evening and all day Saturday, you will see non stop east west activity on the B&O main.Much less activity on Sundays! Suggest you visit NKP museum Bellevue if open!NS (NKP) and C&O lines are active but do not have anywhere the number as B&O.
Remember THIS IS called "THE IRON TRIANGLE".
you can get trapped within the crossovers with 3 or 4 trains going any direction at once.
Small Hotel on route 12 to Findlay near the grain elevators. ( old L&K )
Food, small mom & pop restuarants that serve typical midwest food, good and reasonable, ask any local !
There is a stained glass store north of the B&O passnger depot, owner is a train afficiado also, good source of info, also has lots of train equiptment signs etc/

On my trips back to the states (usually in the dead of winter), Fostoria and Berea are absolute "musts" if only for the sheer quantity of trains. There are more at the Berea site (5.6 per hour last March) compared with 4 per hour at Fostoria (March, 2004). Both are really exciting places to watch trains 24 hours a day if you can stand the cold.

That motel near the NS main line by Mennel Milling and Norton is O.K. Just beware that they don't have very good soap and the towels feel like they were made in Norton. I think they don't put softener in the washing machine or they use too much starch. I'm bringing my own next time.

We were there in Mid-Sept and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. It is somewhat more $$ than the other motel, but it is MUCH nicer. And it has a pool and a jacuzzi to boot.

The aforementioned was my 4th visit to Fostoria in 37 months. I can hardly wait to get back there again.

I recommend bringing a telescope with you and setting it up on the Amtrak platform. When I was there, a friend of mine was able to check all the signals on the Willard and was able to figure out stuff from the Colombus line to without risking missing something on the NS line.

Another good suggestion is a couple of folding chairs and of course a good scanner with spare batteries or a spare battery pack as the case may be.

lammermeier, i was thinking about visiting Berea soon. Could you tell me how fast the trains on both lines roll through there. The faster the better.

tillerthekiller: Regarding your question about the speed of trains at Berea, Ohio: On the NS the trains pass at about 35-40 mph. On the CSX, the intermodals literally fly by at (I estimate) 60 mph or faster. Since the best spot for watching trains is in the parking lot of the Berean Restaurant, you are not more than three feet from the tracks. After a recent snow, you will look like a snowman after one of those "fliers" pass.
