The transportation museum in Spencer is worth the trip. If this fits into your schedule you can drive a steam engine:

There is also a great train store right across the street from the museum. The Little Choo Choo Shop. (The good stuff is in the back room). If it's a weekday you can ride a train from Charlotte to Salisbury and a bus to the museum. The trains run three trips each way every day but the bus only runs weekdays.
The Norfolk Southern yard, and the Amtrak Station are north of city center on North Tryon St. A lightly used NS main line and the CATS light rail line run parallel to South Blvd near Pineville. CSX runs through town as well.

I'll be visiting Charlotte NC in a week or so from MN. Any recommendations on best or "must see' train-watching sites in the metro area? I'll also check out Saluda (though dormant) and the Ridgecrest loops en route there, plus maybe the NC museum in Spencer.
