I made two visits to Chicago in the late 1970's, more to observe and photograph the terminal, commuter, and shortline operations unique to Chicago than the Class 1's. But, to each his own.
Before my second visit, I spent days studying John Szwajkart's guide to Chicago, a good mix of maps, history, summary of railroads and operations, and suggestions for railfanning. I understand it's in it's 3rd edition.
If you want a website, look here for Chicago rail junctions.

I have a freind that is going to Chicago and wants to know of some good railfan spots. Any Suggestions? He would like to see UP, BNSF, NS and CSX.
