It depends on what you are into. The BNSF yard, trolley yard (where the Coasters layover dureing the day) and SD&IV yard are all clearly visible from the Harbor st. overpass right next to Petco park, and next to the convention center. But that is south of the Amtrak depot (ex SF depot) so you will miss the Amtrak action. The Depot itself is a nice spot but can get crowded at times. I myself found the best thing to do is find a nice spot on the beach at Del Mar with a view of the tracks and enjoy. Google the area to see where the tracks and beach are together.

San Diego Hotspots?
Posted by snsgerds on Tuesday, May 20, 2008 8:50 AM

I will be vacationing in the San Diego area this summer with my 10 year old son; we are both avid train watchers.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to where we might find some action?

Thanks
