This most definitly a item were if you have to ask the price, you can't afford one is very true.

The purchase price is just the tip of the iceberg , as the repair and rebuilt cost is probably at least 5 times the purchase price.

Here is one just sold for $800 000 :

Buying a steam locomotive?

Seems like a number of large steam locomotives have changed hands in the last few years (i.e. Soo 2719, Soo 1003, NKP #763, the Chinese QJ's, etc.)

Its such a foreign concept to me of how you'd establish a price for a piece like one of these. Any idea what it costs to buy such a locomotive these days?

- Thanks,
