I can only imagine those smells, sort of like the picture I once saw of a CR safety cab engine that had struck a trailer load of ol Chef Boy Ardee (sp?). The irony of the photo was the can of spaghetti-o's speared on the winshield wiper blade on the engineers side. I'm sure he saw that coming at him in VERY slow motion and was very grateful it didn't penetrate the glass.

(1) They scooped-up what they could find with a combination of sand and absorbent after they had the NTSB folks release the sites to them (which took a while because of the investigation)....and hauled it to the local landfill. The track structure got injected with anhydrous ammonia to kill the smell. (Farmers use it to add nitrogen to the soil)The R/W was tilled-up and landfarmed (added micro-biological agents/ bugs) to digest the organics (syrup)...The road surface was scraped and hosed down several times and finally steamed. It finally quit smelling funny in the spring, then became a weed problem for the roadmaster the rest of the year......

(2) The trucker's insurance company paid for most of the damage. The trucker was held to be at fault (NTSB wrote a report on that incident, may still be on the website....NTSB Report RHR-90-01 12/19/90 only the summary is now posted)...

(*) A Santa Fe employee (heavy equipment operator) riding the train home for the holidays had the misfortune to be in the potty in the lounge car when the collision happened. On top of getting roughed-up in the derailment, he found himself upside down in the potty compartment, his pants down and covered in the dreaded blue amcrap! A wee bit indignant!

Ok - Mr Feathers - got a question for you - how would they clean that mess up; what do you do with it after you clean it up; do they use Hi-Dri to absorb it and can't they dig up the soil and have that cleaned - like they did for Asarco in Omaha before they set the convention center on it.

We have two big companies here - the railroad and Hersheys. Who pays for the cleanup?

Christmas season1989 Amtrak hit a Hershey's syrup truck outside of Stockton, CA causing a derailment and chocolate syrup everywhere. The stench from spoiled chocolate syrup ruined my Christmas that year. Got ill just about any time I saw or smelled chocolate.

Oh I am sure it is - we are very protective of any spills around here since we sit on a rather large aquifer. They mop up everything that spills, to keep it out of the water!

[8D]being a volunteer fireman I was rudly awakened to the sound of a fire call for hazmat unit 897 my unit only to get there and see 10.000 gallons of
U.S.D.A. whole non prossed milk all over the rouad no injuries the truck was not even scratched the trailer totaled the driver ok the crew ok the loco had a 1/4 inch plate of stainless steel about 6x6 imbeded on the nose of a kcs loco
you could see the impression of the nose lights thru the steel train speed 50 mph truck was stoped no injuries[8D]
