Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 17, 2003 12:37 PM
[ does anyone remember the daylight
I was watch ing a show called Trains & locomotives the subject was on
IRONHORSES and the SP daylight train when it went to the worlds fair in New orleans L.a. from Portland Oregon Where it sits on display it also
served on the American Freedom Train In 1976 I think was the year
but they Also had 3 Diesel locomotives in daylight colors 1 was an e-7
the others were SD's of was #7399 A SD40R I think the other was A SD35 Or 40
but SP#7399 never wore SP's newest color scheme It went from daylight to
[SP/SF yellow & red [/red]color scheme now Im not sure were it is it might have been sold for scrap or painted to UP's colors If you can find out were this loco exSP #7399 Is please let me know [8D]

I dont recall ever hearing about an SD-35 or 40 that had been painted Daylight colors. But we do have a beautiful E-8 # 6051 sitting in the Ca. State RR museum in Sacramento.[:D]

Yes!I remember the Daylight colors.[:)]My first train ride was on the San Joaquin Daylight in 1961.We went from LA to Oakland. The train was all Daylight, except for some head end equipment and the diner. We returned to LA on the Coast Daylight in a parlor car, and the train was 20 cars long,in solid Red&Orange.[:D][8D][:p][^]

I'm not old enough to have been around to have seen the Daylight colours, but I've always been a fan of them! As for the SD35, I've seen an HO model of one in the Daylight paint scheme on ebay made by Bachmann, but I don't think it was based on an actual prototype because it had a matching caboose with it.

One of the 4 remaining Alco PA's is in a Mexican museum painted in a Daylight-type scheme with Mexican railroad markings. At one time, SP had trackage in Mexico that was sold to the Mexican government in the 50's. The PA was painted in honor of that fact.[8D]

IIRC, the 7399 was painted in Bi-Centennial paint, not Daylight. The SP had 3 engines painted Bi-Centennial- a U25B, an SD40P commuter engine, and a standard SD40. HTH[8D]

SP SD40 7342, had different daylight schemes on each of her sides. It was painted this way for management to pick what was better looking. SP SD44R 7399, was painted all one daylight scheme. She was sold to EMD on 31 October 1998 then leased back to UP as UP SD40-2 4766 on 4 September 1999.
Im not sure if she is still in service.

Your right on the three, but they were, SP U25B no. 6800, SP GP40P-2 no. 3197, and Cotton Belt SD45T-2 no. 9389.

Carl, I stand corrected. [bow] I had know idea that the SP had a SD-45 in Daylight colors.[8D] It does look pretty cool. I want to paint a GE P-42 Daylight just to see what it looks like[:D]

SP also had four U25B's which were rebuilt with Sulzer engines by M-K and were painted in a variation of Daylight colors.
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul
