Union Pacific engines on NS and CSX...

....In the past sevral months I've noticed quite a few UP engines [even leading], on NS and CSX lines that comes in to Muncie. NS from the north and exits south and west and the ex. Conrail line now CSX...east and west has it's share of them too....Wonder why so many this far east on "other" lines...Would they be leased to these other Co's....? Is UP not busy enough to put their equipment to work now....[?]

The UP has a surplus of the older models with the introduction of the newer units that were purchased in the last five years. They are still serviceable so they can lease them out and make money for UP rather than mothball them or scrap them. You don't think they would just let them have the locomotives with out UP making money on them.

they even go further east.saw an old cnw unit leading a train south at deshler.as long as csx keeps track of the milage UNcle Pete doesnt mind.last weekend there was a lot of bnsf power in deshler too going both ways.

None of the above.

Its just run through trains with UP power, there are UP trains with NS and CSXT power on them also.

....Is this "run through power" a different proceedure than existed say a few years ago....as I don't recall...to this extent, the usage of the "foreign road engines" as we're seeing now.

....And in thinking back a few years before the Conrail breakup....They were almost exclusively using relatively new engines all painted in Conrail blue with the big white double track and wheel logo on their sides. This is on the same route that CSX is running through here now and using the UP power quite often.

Run through agreements have been in place for the last 50 years or so, certainly for the last 30.

I know I've seen UP power on CP before. Once on a CP frieght quite a few years ago. Another time there were UP and SP units sitting together in the CP yards in Cranbrook, BC, but there's a connection to UP at the border, which is close by there. A couple weeks ago my mom told me she saw a UP locomotive on a CP frieght when she was driving.

Depending on how many run through trains are operated will determine how many units cross over on to another railroad. Then they can get into the general power pool and move all over a system before they are returned. I see CSX and NS engines on UP trains all the time.

There are more run through trains all the time. Coal, intermodal, perishable, all sorts of commodities.

all of the above. we are short on power at the end of the road here so we use what is avalible. some up some bnsf and occasionaly a csxt. mostly up. as we are owed alot of engine hours back from up.
