He looked pretty stiff, post-impact. And it also looked as though he was avoiding something else, real or imagined, since he crossed the center line.

I don't think he had time!  He may have had a visor that precluded noticing the descending barrier.  The way he lays still tells me road rash was the least of his worries.  Not good.
