They are close but they are different enough to be a problem. The -2 has different battery box covers, has a site glass on the right side of the long hood and the cab roof is extended back ever so slightly. Some of the GP40's that the GP40E's were made from had lacked the two stiffeners on the blower duct that was stock on the -2's also. BN did have some GP40-2's which they got from the Frisco merge which they leased from KCS though. But they are long gone.

BNSF GP40E Locomotives

I have an undecorated Athearn GP40-2 that I want to paint in BNSF colors. However, BNSF doesnt own any GP40-2's. They do have GP40E units though, from what I can tell these are GP40 rebuilds. Does anyone know what, if any, external differences exist between BNSF GP40E's and an Athearn GP40-2?

Thanks!
