You might look into Sony Digital's SoundForge line of programs; they have some really fabulous stuff for recording and modifying and editing audio and video/ mix and match tracks, special effects, all kinds of goodies. It ain't cheap...
http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/soundforgefamily.asp?ms=1 gets you to SoundForge, http://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/products/showproduct.asp?PID=810 gets you to Vegas+DVD, which does everything but take the original video...

Railroad Video Project Help
Posted by kschmidt on Tuesday, November 25, 2003 5:47 PM
Greetings,

I am working on a project with my "new" computer and its DVD-RW drive. I am hoping to put some of my digital train video onto DVD's.

But now to the part where I need help. I was wondering if someone knows of a program where I can record just the audio track off of a digital video tape or video file and save it as a .wav or mp3 file. Without having to understand Einstein's theory of relativity.

I had a program downloaded earlier this year that had the option "record audio from video". But it was a free download and time ran out and I deleted it and now I can't remember the name of it. It worked great.

Thanks for the help
