When rail was king of travel

A new book features railroad buildings still standing in Fort Wayne

Thousands drive by the boarded-up brick structure at the corner of Fourth and Clinton streets each day. The innocuous, dreary building probably doesn’t even register in most motorists’ consciousness.

But while most see nothing but an old brick building, David E. Longest sees possibilities in the structure built in 1913 as the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern freight house. Longest envisions new life for the building, perhaps as a restaurant or antique mall.

What he doesn’t want to see is the historic building demolished, reduced to a pile of rubble.

“Once you tear those buildings down, you’ve kind of taken a little bit of history out of your community,” he said.
