Stateman Journal - Oregon / March 3, 2007

Salem gets $1 million grant for railroad bridge project

Pathway construction is expected to begin in 2008, officials say

Salem has won a $1 million federal grant for its proposal to convert the Union Street railroad bridge into a bicycle and pedestrian pathway.

City officials said money secured for the project amounts to $2.392 million -- about $108,000 short of the estimated construction cost to open the bridge for use.

"We still have a couple other grant applications pending," said David Skilton, the project coordinator for the city's urban development department in an e-mail. City staffers soon will meet with state transportation officials to begin planning for the project's construction, he said.

The project is expected to go to bid this fall, with construction taking place in 2008, city officials said. It would create a path linking Wallace Marine Park in West Salem and Riverfront Park.
