Code 83 Derailments
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, June 7, 2001 11:30 AM
I am having fits with Rivarossi's Big Boy and Berkshire derailing at Walthers Turnouts. These are code 83 units. The locos appear to ride up on the guard rails at the frogs and derail or in some instances fall over. Is anyone else having this problem? What can be done?

I have a BIGBOY also, it will go thru atlas number 4andhalfs fine. Try looking at the wheel gauge and track gauge. Do the front drivers swivel ok and move freely. Make sure the pilot truck is not lifting up the front drivers.

The key here I think may be the combination of "Rivarossi" and "code 83". Many Rivarossi locos have oversized wheel flanges that make running them on track smaller than code 100 somewhat iffy. The flanges bottom out on the ties and guard rails especially on turnouts. Some Rivarossi locos have been upgraded including smaller flanges, but may still have trouble on smaller than code 100. You may get more and better replies in the Model railroading forum. Ron
