Coal train derails in Broken Bow

BROKEN BOW — A Saturday train derailment in downtown Broken Bow damaged a local business, closed railroad crossings and left several tons of spilled coal.

According to Steve Forsberg, a spokesman with Burlington-Northern Santa Fe Railroad, about 17 cars in the middle of an eastbound coal train derailed Saturday evening about 6:45 p.m.

No injuries were reported and no hazardous material was spilled, Forsberg said. Although the accident investigation is incomplete and the cause of the accident is unknown, railroad officials are focusing on a broken wheel on the 51st car, Forsberg said.
