NAPERVILLE, IL -- The sale of troubled Greyhound bus company by its owner, Laidlaw, to a British school bus and train company may alter future of Greyhound. Spinoff by new owner or de-emphasis of intercity bus service and further route cuts could be boon to Amtrak.

How?
Especially when the usual derailments or washouts take place, Amtrak uses buses to ferry passengers to the next destionation.
Buses go to most places that Amtrak doesn't. Highways to to places untouched by rail. Buses are more flexible, and frankly are faster door to door than Amtrak.
If indeed there is a loss of Greyhound bus service, the clientelle will simply shift to another bus line, drive themselves, or start flying. Amtrak is still the least option for most folks, for the obvious reasons.
What would be unique is if a bus line took over some Amtrak routes via privatization of passenger rail services. Then we'd see some esoteric versions of passenger intermodalism.
